Choosing an index for finding a review

You can use indexes to find book reviews. Some specialized indexes cover only book reviews (Book Review Index, Book Review Digest), and some indexes cover book reviews in addition to other kinds of articles. Some book reviews are available online, while others are available only in print format.

    Online Sources
    Book Review Digest
    • Coverage dates from 1905-present
    • Covers most subject areas. Includes excerpts of reviews cited. This source is especially useful for books distributed and sold widely.

    Academic Search Premier
    • Available on the Libraries Web Site under "Indexes and Databases A-Z."
    • Coverage for the online database dates from 1980-present
    Book Review Index
    • Coverage dates from 1965-present
    • More comprehensive than the source above, but starts in 1965 and does not have excerpts of reviews. If you are in a hurry, this is the print source to check first.
    • Location: Wilson Reference quarto Z1035 .A1 B62x
    Choice Reviews
    • Available on the Library Web Site under "Articles and More."
    • CHOICE reviews significant current books and electronic resources of interest to those in higher education.
    ProQuest Newsstand
    • Available on the Library Web Site under "Articles and More."
    • Find full-text reviews in 150 newspapers using the Advanced Search.

If your book was published before 1980, you will want to start with something like the PCI, Periodical Contents Index, an online index available on the Library Web Site under " Articles and More" or Book Review Digest (see the list above). There are many other places to look for book reviews, so ask for help at the reference desk. The guide, "Locating Book Reviews in Wilson Library," included in Useful Links below, has many other sources listed.
