    Adding References into RefWorks

Here are additional methods to move (or import) references into RefWorks. The first method works to move MNCAT records into RefWorks; the second method works for importing article references into RefWorks.

    • Importing references from MNCAT, the U of M Libraries' Catalog, into RefWorks:

First, search for references in MNCAT and save them as a .txt file, following these steps:

      1. Mark the citations you wish to import by checking the box next to each citation OR you may select Mark All from the Whole Set section in MNCAT.
      2. Select Save/Mail from the Marked Records section in MNCAT.
      3. Change the Format from Brief Citation to Standard Full. Leave the other fields blank and select Send.
      4. Select Save Marked on the Save File to PC page.
      5. From the File menu, select Save As. Save the file to the location of your choice. Be sure to save it with a .txt extension (a text file).

Then, in RefWorks, open the saved file, and save them in a RefWorks folder of your choice:

      1. Log in to your RefWorks account.
      2. Select Import.
      3. Using the Import Filter/Data source drop-down menu, select Ex Libris ALEPH.
      4. Using the Database drop-down menu, select University of Minnesota (Full).
      5. Keeping the radio button selected under Import Data from the Following Text File, select Browse to locate the file you saved from your search, then choose Open.
      6. Select the Import button.
      7. Your citations will be now imported from MNCAT into your RefWorks database into the Last Imported Folder. You may now move them into the folder of your choice.

    • Adding References From Other Library Databases

Each library database comes from a database vendor. These vendors have a certain way of allowing you to move references into RefWorks. In some cases, you won't need to identify the correct vendor in order to import your references into RefWorks; but in others, you will need to go to the homepage of the database and look for a vendor OR company name, usually in the upper right or left-hand corner. If you are unable to import your references into RefWorks, contact the Libraries for help with the particular vendor you are using at http://infopoint.lib.umn.edu/

Since each library database can work a bit differently, it's best to the vendor's directions to import the references into RefWorks. You can find the list of import directions for many library databases at http://www.lib.umn.edu/refworks/import/
