    Citing encyclopedias and dictionaries

    When citing encyclopedias or dictionaries, include the following information:

    • author(s) and/or editor(s)
      (for major reference works with large editorial boards, list the lead editor, followed by et al.)
    • year of publication or copyright
    • title of article or entry
    • encyclopedia or dictionary title
    • edition (if present)
    • volume number, page numbers
    • city of publication
    • publishing company

     Example:

    Janos, A. G. (1996). Cold war. In Encyclopedia Americana

      (6th ed., Vol. 3, pp. 222-223). Danbury, CT: Grolier.
